چکیده

core were investigated. It was shown from the measurement that the beat length was about L = 23 mm (birefringence B = 5 x 10") and the state of linear polarisation of the incident light beam was maintained up to 0-6 kg/cm of the concentrated force when the incident plane of polarisation was coincident with the major axis of the fibre. It was also shown that the degree and the plane of polarisation were scarcely influenced by the ambient conditions such as temperature variations from 20°C to 100°C, and twists of the fibre. The extinction ratio of the short fibre was greater than 30 dB.

Analysis and measurement of birefringence in single-mode fibers using the backscattering method.

The local parameters of linear, circular, and elliptical birefringence of backscattered light along a single-mode fiber are analyzed, and the twist-bending-induced elliptical birefringence in an extremely low birefringent single-mode fiber is measured using the backscattering method. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. For a 130-microm-diameter fibe...

Birefringence analysis of multilayer leaky cladding optical fibre

We analyze a multilayer leaky cladding (MLC) fibre using the finite element method and study the effect of the MLC on the bending loss and birefringence of two types of structures: i) a circular-core large-mode area structure and ii) an elliptical-small-core structure. In a large-mode-area structure, we verify that the multi-layer leaky cladding strongly discriminates against higher order modes...

Simple Method for Polarization Dispersion Measurements in Long Single-Mode Fibres

The study of polarization dispersion in standard single-mode fibres takes on a growing importance, because the delay between polarization modes causes pulse broadening and may become predominant in multigigabit long-span optical links. The combined effects of weak birefringence and fluctuating mode coupling result in a stochastic behaviour of the polarization dispersion and of the output polari...

Measurement and analysis of polarisation effects in optical fibres with a polarimetric OTDR

where, in electrical measurement, a transmitter sends a pulse along a coaxial cable and a receiver and oscilloscope monitor the echoes returning back to the input. Optical TDR was first demonstrated by Barnoski and Jensen in 1976 in multi mode fibres [17] and over the years, it has proved to be an invaluable diagnostic tool for use in both multi mode and single mode optical fibre systems to mea...

Precision measurement of modal birefringence of highly birefringent fibers by periodic lateral force.

Applications of single-mode fibers to coherent optical fiber communication systems1 and fiber sensor systems2 require a definite state of polarization along the fiber length. Polarization-maintaining fibers such as elliptically clad3 and stress-applied4 single-mode fibers have a high internal birefringence that exceeds perturbing birefringence and produces linear polarization along the fiber. O...
